So I heard a rumour that FWD is moving to sunday nights now, presumably so that DJ's can go and play their big friday night bookings at ministry/universities and earn their P's playing boring main room wobblers to drunk students. Why play to 100 people when you can play to 1000? Fine, fair enough, whatever. We all knew dubstep would stumble drunk down the same cul-de-sac as drum and bass and here it is. On the plus side new hyperdub releases on the way, Kode9 pushing things FWD with new releases from L.v, responsible for the massive Takeover dub previously released on hyperdub, and Samiyam, who I think is mates with Flying Lotus and makes the same kind of J. Dilla inspired beats. Huge props to Kode9 for steering hyperdub away from a ship that is gradually sinking.
When The Boss wanted to sell records to the black kids he did what anyone would have done in the 80's, got Arthur Baker to re-edit Dancing in the Dark into a more DJ friendly version. Baker overdubbed synth lines, glockenspiels, additional vocal harmonies and chopped and echoed Springsteens vocal parts, all from tape.
The resulting remix, the Blaster mix, became the biggest selling 12" in 1984 and rocked dancefloors. Many of Springsteens fans hated the remix though, which lead to Bakers response: "I got really offended. What is so different? It has a fucking glockenspiel, which Bruce has used before, background vocals ... it's no different. See, if any of those mixes had come out before, with no one knowing the other version, no one would have said a word."
Here is a Deadboy Racer vs Ghosthype live set broadcast on Radio Reverb in Brighton on Friday night, played on laptop, melodica, dubsiren and space echo and recorded to cassette. Hope you like (its a 320kbps mp3 by the way so you may have to exercise some patience). Bless!
Black Pudding Crew have secured a monthly residence at Hectors House in Brighton, get down there for bass and beats, plus big big acts in the pipeline.
